Exceptional mid-20th-century Chinese folding screen dating from the 1950s, comprising six hinged panels in black lacquer, richly decorated with gesso-painted reliefs.
One side features a finely detailed continuous landscape scene, depicting traditional riverside life with pavilions, bridges, boats, scholars, and villagers, all rendered in sculpted relief. The composition is highly intricate, offering remarkable depth, movement, and narrative detail. Decorative floral and bird panels adorn the lower registers, enhancing the screen’s ornamental richness.
The reverse side is decorated with an elegant and minimalist bamboo motif on a black lacquer ground, creating a striking contrast between the ornate narrative front and the serene, contemplative reverse.
